Barbara Walters announces final day on 'The View'

Barbara Walters is making good on a promise she made last year.

The 84-year-old broadcast vet announced on her talk show Monday that May 16th would be her final appearance as a co-host on "The View," winding down decades of a groundbreaking career.

Walters became the first female co-anchor of a network evening news show in 1976 when she teamed with Harry Reasoner on the "ABC Evening News."  And even though she's retiring from work on camera, Walters says she'll still be active behind the scenes as an executive producer for the talk show she launched back in 1997.

Following Walters' last hurrah on the "The View," ABC will air a primetime special celebrating her life and career that night.  On Monday's "View," co-host Whoopi Goldberg also announced that ABC would rename its news headquarters in New York City, The Barbara Walters Building.
